Many
years ago on a very frosty morning at the end of March,
we left England to travel to Sardinia for the very first time. We arrived
in Alghero less than 2 and a half hours later and were delighted to find
the island in bloom. The spring sky was clear and bright and the aroma
of thyme and orange blossom filled the air.
We spent a few hours in the bustling town of Alghero exploring the historic
centre with its massive stone walls and fortifications, and after a visit
to San Francesco monastery and a spot of lunch in the sunshine overlooking
the sea, we headed for the quieter East coast of the island.
Once we had settled into our small hotel in Orosei, we took a walk around
the pretty little market town, the marina and along the long, sandy beach,
and in the evening the hotel owner introduced us to some traditional Sardinian
cuisine in his restaurant. We ended our first day in Sardinia with a delightful
meal of Malloreddus alla Campidanese (a saffron pasta dish with a hearty
salsiccia sauce), stuffed snails with artichokes, lamb in white wine sauce
and 'Involtini', accompanied by a wonderful bottle of local wine from
the Sella & Mosca vinery, followed by a plate of 'Seadas', the famous
little cheese pies with honey and lemon drizzle.
The next day, fresh and keen after a restful night, we
set about discovering the surrounding area:
Sardinia's
rugged beauty had attracted us already on our trip across the island,
but after a few days exploring this area we were completely captivated
by the untamed beauty of the coast line and the impressive Gennargentu
mountain range. The majestic cliffs and hidden
bays with fine white sand next to the turquoise and sometimes emerald
green sea, the fragrance of unusual flowers and shrubs and the taste of
the first artichokes and wild asparagus sprouting in the meadows under
the pine trees, invigorated all our senses.
We saw many unusual birds
on our nature walks ,
watched cormorants diving off the cliffs and flamingoes wading in the
lagoons. We climbed
over the sand dunes in the Parco Nazionale at Capo Comino and walked
along the beaches of La Caletta, Posada,
Budoni
and San
Teodoro just miles and miles of light sand and only the sound of the
waves lapping onto the shore. Heavenly!
When
we ventured further inland by car, we found the strong contrast between
the modern ports and towns and the hinterland with its traditional villages
and 'Nuraghi' immensely fascinating. Traces of a multitude of foreign
influences on the island's architecture, traditions and food became apparent.
We were taken by the earnest yet exceptionally friendly manner with which
the Sards welcomed us and with the help of our friendly and knowledgeable
hosts, we were able to get to know some of Sardinia's varied cuisine and
sample the local culinary delights.
Towards the end of our stay we took a boat trip along the coast with an
experienced diver, who showed us mesmerising sea caves and beautiful deserted
bays with such clear waters, that we could see to the bottom of the sea
far below us. By then we were seriously enchanted with Sardinia. and upon
our return to the UK, family and friends were surprised to hear us talk
with such zeal about the island and keen to discover it for themselves.
We were of course overjoyed when they confirmed that we had indeed discovered
a little gem of an island in the middle of the Mediterranean and equally
astonished to find that this part of Sardinia was still almost completely
unknown to Holidaymakers from the UK and Ireland, but when we looked for
holiday rentals in the area, we soon discovered "Sardafit",
a group of local Holiday home owners, who had already been offering their
seaside villas and apartments to visitors from Continental Europe for
more than 20 years.
We were amazed to find such a wide and varied selection of properties
close to the most wonderful sandy beaches and the crystal clear sea, and
after ater a few more visits to Satdinia, we decided that, with our enthusiasm
and many years of experience in the travel industry, we were ready to
introduce this coastline of Sardinia to the UK and Ireland. We have since
also attracted many international travelers and had a wonderful response
to our program.
With the
program in its 8th year and our
love for Sardinia unscathed, we hope that you will be just as enchanted
with this wonderful island as we are!
